Using TrustBnB

There's nothing to set up. Browse Airbnb as usual and TrustBnB scores every listing it finds.

Search results

Each listing card's rating is replaced by a TrustBnB badge, for example 4.2 Fine. It shows the score out of 5, its tier, and the honest star, filled as far as the score goes and colored by tier:

4.8 Great   4.0 Fine   3.2 Meh   2.3 Poor

Hover a badge to see the listing's rank ("Top 8% in Paris") and Airbnb's original rating and review count. Listings marked New have no rating yet, so TrustBnB leaves them alone.

The map, the "Guest favorite" label and everything else on the page stay as they are.

Listing pages

When you open a listing, TrustBnB adds a panel under the title with the score, the tier, the listing's rank in its city, and what Airbnb shows.

It also rewrites Airbnb's own rating numbers on the page (next to the title, in the Guest favorite block, in the booking box and above the reviews) to the TrustBnB score. Each rewritten number gets a lime highlight so you can tell it apart, and hovering it shows Airbnb's original. Only the text changes, so the page works exactly as before.

The popup

Click the TrustBnB icon in the toolbar.

Status line. Says whether TrustBnB is working on the current tab, and updates every second while the popup is open:

Light Message What it means
Green 12 of 14 ratings re-graded in Paris Working. The city is the one listings are compared with.
Yellow Running, but no ratings found on this page On Airbnb, but nothing to score here, or Airbnb changed its page.
Yellow TrustBnB isn't running on this page yet Reload the page.
Red Open an Airbnb page to see honest ratings The tab isn't on Airbnb.
Lavender Paused You switched TrustBnB off.

On/off switch (top right). Off puts every Airbnb rating back as it was.

Airbnb's ratings. Replace with ours (the default) swaps Airbnb's numbers for TrustBnB's. Show both keeps Airbnb's rating on cards with the TrustBnB badge next to it, and leaves the numbers on listing pages untouched (the panel still appears).

Grading. Realistic (the default) grades like TripAdvisor, where most places land around 4. Strict is a pure ranking: the median listing gets 3.0. See Re-grade on 1–5.

Check a rating. Type any Airbnb rating and review count, pick a city, and see its TrustBnB score. Handy for a listing someone sent you as a screenshot.

The footer says how many cities and listings TrustBnB's data covers and when Inside Airbnb collected it.

Which city a listing is compared with

TrustBnB works out the city from the page:

  1. The place in the address of a search (/s/Copenhagen--Denmark/homes, or ?query=Lisbon), or the title of a listing page.
  2. Otherwise, the middle of the map you're looking at, or the listing's location, if it's within 60 km of one of TrustBnB's cities.
  3. Otherwise, all of TrustBnB's cities together.

The popup's status line names the city it picked ("re-graded in Copenhagen", or "against all cities").

Troubleshooting

Yellow: "TrustBnB isn't running on this page yet." The tab was open before TrustBnB was installed or updated. Reload the page.

Yellow: "Running, but no ratings found on this page." Some Airbnb pages have no listing ratings (experiences, messages, your trips). On a search or listing page, Airbnb has probably changed how it lays out ratings. Please open an issue with the page's address and, if you can, a screenshot.

Red on an Airbnb page. TrustBnB doesn't recognize the site's address. Open an issue with the address.

Scores look off for a city. Check the popup's status line: if it says "against all cities", TrustBnB has no data for that city and is comparing with all of its cities together.

After updating, nothing changed. In chrome://extensions, click the reload arrow on TrustBnB's card, then reload your Airbnb tabs.
