Airbnb ratings, made honest.

Almost every Airbnb listing is rated 4.5 or more, so the stars rarely help you choose. TrustBnB re-grades each listing against the rest of its city, on the full 1–5 scale, right on Airbnb.

Typical large city, 50 reviews

The problem

On Airbnb, every stay is excellent.

Guests rarely give less than five stars, so ratings pile up at the top of the scale. A 4.85 sounds great, until you learn that in a typical big city, a third of the listings do better. And a 4.70, which still looks very good, is in the bottom quarter.

The information is there; it's just squeezed into the last few tenths of a star. TrustBnB spreads it back out.

How it works

Three steps, done in your browser.

  1. Weigh the reviews

A 5.0 from 3 guests counts for less than a 4.95 from 300. Ratings with few reviews are pulled towards the city's average.

  2. Rank it in its city

TrustBnB works out what share of the city's listings this one beats, from data on hundreds of thousands of listings.

  3. Re-grade on 1–5

That rank becomes a score on a scale people actually use from top to bottom, like TripAdvisor's.

Questions

Good to know

Is TrustBnB free?

Yes. There's no account, no ads and nothing to pay. See the roadmap for what's coming next.

Why is a 4.9 listing only "Fine"?

Because in many cities, plenty of listings are rated even higher with as many reviews. TrustBnB tells you where a listing stands among its neighbours, not whether guests liked it: most of them did.

Does it work in my city?

It works on every Airbnb site. In the 44 cities TrustBnB has data for, from Amsterdam to Tokyo, listings are compared with their own city. Elsewhere they're compared with all of those cities together.

Does it change anything on Airbnb?

Only what you see in your own browser. Bookings, prices and the page itself work exactly as before, and you can switch TrustBnB off from its popup at any time.

Is TrustBnB made by Airbnb?

No. TrustBnB is an independent project and is not affiliated with Airbnb.

Stop guessing what 4.9 means.
