TrustBnB is a free browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc and Firefox. It gives every Airbnb listing a score that actually tells listings apart.
Search results
Each listing's rating becomes a TrustBnB badge: the score, its tier, and a star filled to match.
Listing pages
A TrustBnB panel under the title, and Airbnb's own rating numbers rewritten to the TrustBnB score.
Toolbar popup
See whether TrustBnB is working on the page, choose how scores appear, or check any rating by hand.
Private
The rating data is built into the extension. TrustBnB makes no network requests and collects nothing.
Why Airbnb ratings need help
Guests rate almost every Airbnb stay 4 or 5 stars. In their study of Airbnb and TripAdvisor, Zervas, Proserpio and Byers found that nearly 95% of Airbnb listings had an average rating of 4.5 stars or more, while hotel ratings on TripAdvisor were spread much more widely.
When most listings sit between 4.7 and 5.0, small differences matter and are easy to miss. In a typical big city, a 4.97 with 50 reviews is in the top 5% of listings, a 4.85 is in the top third, and a 4.70, which still sounds very good, is in the bottom quarter. TrustBnB makes that visible: it compares each listing with the rest of its city, gives more weight to ratings backed by many reviews, and turns the result into a 1–5 score that uses the whole scale.
What the score means
| Airbnb shows | TrustBnB shows | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|
| ★ 4.97 | 4.8 Great | Top 5% of its city |
| ★ 4.85 | 4.2 Fine | Top third |
| ★ 4.70 | 3.4 Meh | Bottom quarter |
Typical large city, 50 reviews each.
On the default curve about 30% of listings are Great, as on review sites where people use the whole 5-star scale. How the score works has the details.
Where it works
On every Airbnb country site: airbnb.com, airbnb.co.uk, airbnb.fr, airbnb.ae, airbnb.com.au and the rest. Listings are compared with their own city in the 44 cities TrustBnB has data for, and with all of those cities together everywhere else. See Rating data for the list.
